Celebrating International Credit Union Day: Dupaco’s differentiator and commitment to members

DUBUQUE, Iowa— Dupaco and credit unions worldwide are celebrating its members today, International Credit Union Day. This annual event commemorates the credit union movement’s impact and achievements, marking its 76th anniversary this year.

Dupaco was also officially chartered 76 years ago on July 17, 1948, by its ten founding members. They established the credit union on the principles of thrift, access to affordable credit and the opportunity for its members to own and control their money on a democratic basis, aiming to improve their economic and social conditions.

Dupaco and its more than 600 employees are proud to serve over 170,000 members throughout all 50 states, District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and 26 other countries, according to Dupaco President/CEO Joe Hearn.

“Dupaco is more than local, it’s a financial cooperative, owned by its community of members,” said Hearn. “As we celebrate International Credit Union Day, I’m proud of Dupaco’s legacy and the positive impact the credit union has had on our members and the communities we serve.”

While financial products and services have evolved over the financial cooperative’s 76 years, Dupaco continuously seeks to enhance value for its member-owners. The cooperative achieves this in a variety of ways, including product, service and technology enhancements; unique programs like its award-winning Thank Use program, which has paid out more than $29 million in bonus dividends since 2016; branch convenience; staff expertise and service; higher savings rates; lower loan rates and fees; and more.

One thing remains consistent for Dupaco after 76 years: all members have an equal say in their credit union, where each member has one vote for their board of directors, no matter how much money they have in deposits or loans at Dupaco.

Dupaco’s current volunteer board of directors are:

  • Ellen Goodmann Miller, chair of the board; Resource Development Specialist, Gronen; and Hawks Goodmann & Associates
  • Steve Chapman, vice chair; retired, Auxiant
  • Denise Dolan, secretary; retired, Auditor, Dubuque County
  • Andy Schroeder, treasurer; Vice President, Prenger Solutions Group
